New Articles: January 2008

I have an essay in the current issue of New Politics, discussing my experience writing about torture in my book American Methods.

You can find it online here:
https://newpol.org/issue_post/confronting-horror-writing-about-torture/

My review of A Dangerous Woman: The Graphic Biography of Emma Goldman, is also out now. It’s online at Mindbuck.com:
http://www.mindbuck.com/comics.html

And I somehow ended up with three reviews in the most recent Comics Journal. They discuss The Mad War on Bush, Sandman Mystery Theater: “Dr. Death” and “The Night of the Butcher”, and Defenders of Freedom: From the Chronicles of the ACLU’s Defense Team. None of those are online, I’m afraid.

Speaking event: January 17, Portland

I’ll be speaking this Thursday, January 17, at 7pm at the First Unitarian Church (1011 SW 12th, between Salmon and Main) in Portland.

I’m going to read a bit from my book American Methods: Torture and the Logic of Domination, and discuss the policy decisions behind the United States’ current torture practices. In particular, I’ll be arguing that both political parties share responsibility for the government’s use of torture, and that the coming elections are unlikely to have much effect on its practices.

A reception will follow the talk, and I’ll be on hand to answer questions or sign books.

Please come if you’re in the area, and let your friends know as well.

This is not a blog

This is not a blog. I’m not going to offer a running commentary on world affairs, or post entries from my diary, or anything like that. Instead, I’m going to use this modest web site to post updates so that people who are interested can find out when I’ve written something new (and where they can find it), or if I’m speaking, or whatnot.

Right now, quite obviously, the site is under construction. I promise to fully enter the age of technology soon. Please check back. Or subscribe to the “Entries” RSS feed at the bottom of the page.
